Vector Solutions' Sixth Year of Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month Initiative
Through a number of educational programs intended to increase awareness, lower risk, and support prevention efforts throughout the fire service, Vector Solutions is reaffirming its long-standing commitment to firefighter health and safety in honor of Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month in January.
Vector's Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month program, now in its sixth year, increases access to vital training, expert-led instruction, and new resources that assist departments in proactively addressing cancer, one of the biggest health risks facing firemen today.
“Education and awareness are among the most powerful tools we have to reduce cancer risk in the fire service,” said Todd LeDuc, retired fire chief and CEO of Life Scan Wellness. “Initiatives like this help firefighters understand the risks they face and take meaningful steps to protect themselves and their crews, today and over the long term.”
According to the CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), firefighters have a 9% higher chance of receiving a cancer diagnosis and a 14% higher risk of dying from cancer than the general U.S. population, making cancer the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service.
A three-part Firefighter Cancer Awareness webinar series centered on prevention, research, and operational best practices is being offered by Vector Solutions as part of its 2026 campaign. In order to provide firefighters and their families with direct support, Vector will donate $5 to the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN) for each webinar registration, up to a total of $3,000.
“The Firefighter Cancer Support Network exists to ensure that no firefighter faces cancer alone,” said Lisa Raggio, CEO of FCSN. “Vector Solutions’ continued commitment to education, prevention, and direct support makes a meaningful difference for firefighters and their families nationwide.”
The webinar series, which is available to firefighters for free in January, consists of:
- Firefighter Nation's "Protecting Your Crew: The Top 25 Steps for Reducing Firefighter Cancer Risk"
- Fighting Occupational Cancer in the Fire Service: Early Detection, Prevention, and Research (Hosted by Vector Solutions)
- Improving PPE Safety: Inspection Techniques to Lower Firefighter Cancer Risks (Hosted by Firefighter Nation)
Vector Solutions is offering free access to their NFPA 1851: Cancer-Related Risks of Firefighting course for the month of January. In order to help firefighters better understand and lower occupational cancer risks, the video-based training is in line with NFPA guidelines and incorporates interactive learning, real-life case studies, and preventative techniques.
Firefighters are more likely to get skin melanoma, prostate cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and testicular cancer, which highlights the significance of continuing education that is in line with requirements.
“Firefighter health and safety has always been core to Vector’s mission,” said Robbi King, a 27-year veteran firefighter, former Chief Officer, and now Director, PS Solutions Engineer at Vector Solutions. “By expanding access to standards-aligned training, supporting the National Firefighter Cancer Registry, and partnering with organizations like FCSN, we’re helping departments turn awareness into action.”
The NFR can better investigate long-term cancer outcomes when firefighters register and submit continuous work history data. This helps shape future safety regulations, enhance health precautions, and get a better understanding of cancer risk throughout the fire service.
