A bill to make Nebraska firefighters diagnosed with cancer automatically eligible for workers' compensation benefits was defeated by a filibuster on Monday.

Only 32 senators voted to end debate over Sen. Dave Wordekemper's bill (LB400) to make professional firefighters in Nebraska presumptively eligible for benefits if they are diagnosed with certain kinds of cancer.
