'It's been an honor,' Broadcast Director of National Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service Says
EMMITSBURG, MD – Spruce McRee has directed broadcasts at Super Bowls, the World Series, the Kentucky Derby and college sports.
And, for the past 18 years, he’s made sure the world can watch the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial weekend events.
“This is near and dear to my heart. Nothing matters more. The families of the firefighters are what it’s all about.”
McRee, the chief of Brierfield Volunteer Fire Department in Alabama, has been in the fire service for 52 years.
He and the production crew arrive at the National Fire Academy campus days before the event to place cameras on risers around memorial plaza. Cables on sidewalks are covered to prevent trip hazards.
Inside the production trailer, he watches multiple screens to make sure the cameras are placed correctly. Tests are done to make sure every angle is captured.
He’s not the only one that has embraced the mission. Fletcher (NEP) donates the robotic cameras and SOS Global ships them.
“There are so many people involved to make sure this goes off without a hitch.”
McRee said having the service held outdoors in front of the memorial adds to the experience for the families and fellow firefighters. While reverent, when the event is held inside at nearby Mount St. Mary’s University, just isn’t the same.
“It’s meant so much to me over the years…”
After 18 years in the production trailer in Emmitsburg, McRee has stepped aside to spend more time with family.
“It really was a labor of love. The Lord blessed me and it was my honor to use it…”
