CUMBERLAND, Md. -- Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling an early morning, two-alarm blaze Sunday on North Lee Street in Cumberland, said Cumberland Fire Department Capt. Tim Growden.

City fire crews were called out at 4:24 a.m. for a working fire and when they arrived at the scene, the fire was upgraded to a two-alarm fire, Growden said.

The fire left the building uninhabitable, but Growden, who was not at the scene, wasn't certain whether the building was inhabited. Because the Red Cross was not called, anyone who lived there apparently had someone they could stay with, he said. The house appeared to be gutted and the roof was destroyed.

The injured firefighters had "sprains and strains," Growden said. The scene was not cleared until about 10 a.m.

Capt. Daron Winters was in command at the scene in charge of fire operations. The blaze is under investigation by the state fire marshal's office.

Growden could not release any additional information.

Numerous volunteer companies also assisted Cumberland firefighters.
