Dec. 02--Blustery conditions made a difficult and dangerous task even more so as firefighters battled a two-alarm house fire in Fairfield on Thursday that sent two of their own to a local hospital for treatment of burns.
At approximately 12:24 p.m. fire crews responded to the 200 block of East Tennessee Street after a resident called 911 to report a fire at the rear of the home. Soon after, thick black smoke was seen billowing high into the air and flames crested the rooftop.
While battling the structure fire, two firefighters inside the home were injured, according to Fairfield Fire Chief Vince Webster.
"Pretty much the entire structure was involved," Webster said.
The two firefighters were transported to NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield for what Webster said were minor to moderate burn injuries.
Webster estimated that winds gusting around 40 miles per hour made the task of battling the fire more difficult.
"Our biggest concern is to keep the fire confined to the structure of origin. And with the wind, it can spread quickly," Webster said.
It took crews about 30 minutes to get the blaze under control, according to Webster.
About 30 personnel and nine fire engines responded to battle the blaze. Fairfield fire crews got assistance from Cordelia Fire Protection District, Vacaville Fire Department, Vallejo Fire Department, and Suisun Fire Protection District.
The American Red Cross Bay Area was on scene to assist the residents with temporary housing and
the Solano County Fire Investigation Unit was called out, according to Webster.
"Because of the injuries we're going to have to do an extensive investigation," Webster said.
