Two Ind. Firefighters Injured in Fall From Ladder

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- Two Lapel firefighters were in good condition Wednesday after suffering minor injuries Tuesday night while responding to a fire in Hamilton County.

According to Chief Jeff Passwater, the two firefighters fell from a ladder due to water pressure in their fire hose, which "whipped around" on them. Passwater said the firefighter at the top of the ladder fell 12 feet to the ground. Both were transported to Riverview Hospital, where they were later released. Neither was seriously injured in the fall.

"They were both pretty sore today, but weren't hurt too bad," Passwater said.

The fire occurred in the 16000 block of East Indiana 32 in Wayne Township. Lapel, as well as departments from Noblesville, Pendleton and White River responded to the fire.

According to Wayne Township firefighter Dave Barker, the fire started at 8:28 p.m. but was not put out until just before midnight. Barker said it was a two story residence, which had been added on to several times.

"It was kind of a weird house, the roof had a lot of pockets that the fire could get trapped under," Barker said.

Barker said the home was being rented, but no one was home at the time of the fire. The renter did not arrive at the scene until Wednesday morning. The residence was a stand-alone structure and there was no danger of the fire spreading.

Barker said firefighters did a "good job" of stopping the fire, saving the east end of the home. The west end however, was severely damaged.

As of Wednesday afternoon it is unknown what started the fire, however an investigation is being handled by the Hamilton County fire investigator.
