A woman hurt her leg after jumping from the second story of an apartment building that was on fire early Saturday morning.
"They did not have an operating smoke detector," said Battalion Chief Ross Kelly with the Bakersfield Fire Department. "They woke up, smelled the smoke, realized there was a fire below them, and all three of them jumped from the second floor."
It happened about 12:40 a.m. Saturday on Kentucky Street in East Bakersfield.
Two men and a woman jumped from the building. The men were not hurt, but the woman was taken to the hospital with a leg injury.
A firefighter was also taken to the hospital with a shoulder injury sustained while battling the blaze.
Fire crews said they got the fire controlled in 16 minutes, and they're investigating the cause.
They are also looking into whether the people living in the building were renting or not, because Ross said there was no running power and some of the windows had been boarded up.
The fire caused about $100,000 in damage to the building.
