Smoky House Fire Injures Calif. Firefighter

Oct. 06--OAKLAND -- A firefighter was sent to an area hospital with an elbow injury he sustained while battling a one-alarm fire at a home above the Oakland Zoo. No one was home at the time and no one else was injured. The fire broke out at 12:27 p.m. at 10700 Snowdown Ave. at the intersection of Malcolm Avenue in the Oakland hills, Oakland Batallion Chief Erik Logan said. It was controlled in about 25 minutes, Logan said.

The fire broke out at 12:27 p.m. at 10700 Snowdown Ave. at the intersection of Malcolm Avenue in the Oakland hills, Oakland Batallion Chief Erik Logan said. It was controlled in about 25 minutes, Logan said.

The blaze sent up a large black plume of smoke, which could be seen for miles. The cause of the fire and a damage estimate were not immediately available, Logan said.

The American Red Cross will be assisting the occupants of the home, a fire department spokeswoman said.
