Oct. 04--A Memphis firefighter was injured Monday night while battling a house fire in South Memphis that was intentionally set, officials said.

The firefighter suffered second-degree burns to his ears, officials said. He was taken to the burn unit at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis, where he was treated and released.

At 8:35 p.m., firefighters arrived at 1669 Shadowlawn, where they saw fire coming from a one-story wood-frame residential boarding house. About 31 fire department personnel responded to the blaze, which was brought under control at 8:47 p.m. and knocked down at 8:52 p.m.

MFD officials determined that the fire was intentionally set in a bedroom. A 64-year-old woman was detained and committed to The Med for mental evaluation.

There were no civilian injuries at the boarding house, which had a working smoke detector, officials said. The smoke, fire and water damage is estimated at $35,000 for the house and $5,000 for contents.
