A Clay Fire Territory pumper tanker flipped on its side after colliding with a Roseland police cruiser Wednesday evening sending three people to the hospital, according to WNDU-TV
The collision occurred at the intersection of Juniper and Cleveland streets in Clay Township. The fire apparatus was heading to a call in Harris Township while police were responding to a separate call of a crash. The truck flipped on its side and hit another car, according to the television station.
One firefighter, a police officer and a civilian were taken to the hospital with what was described as non-life-threatening injuries. A second cruiser and a passenger car were also involved in the collision, according to the station's report.
The accident occurred at about 6 p.m. Clay Fire Territory Fire Chief John Vance said he nearly burst into tears at the site of the apparatus on its side, knowing that a firefighter was still inside.
The television station reported that Clay fire officials believe the cruiser hit the apparatus as there’s an Opticom system at the intersection which gives fire apparatus the right of way.
St. Joseph County’s Fatal Alcohol Crash Team was called in to investigate the crash. Although there were no fatalities, it is customary for the team to investigate crashes were multiple agencies are involved, according to the television station.
