SAN ANTONIO --

Officials say a 90-year-old woman died in an East side house fire on Monday afternoon.

The fire, in the 800 block of Hays, broke out around 4 p.m.

Family members of the woman said she was a smoker and that she was recovering from a recent surgery.

Firefighters said the house's metal roof made it difficult to combat the blaze, which sent billowing clouds of white smoke into the air.

One firefighter was taken to an area hospital for heat exhaustion, officials said. Several others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

San Antonio fire Chief Charles Hood said the as-yet-unidentified woman is the eighth fire-related fatality this year.
