Sept. 07--SEATTLE -- A Seattle firefighter was hit by a car and injured while on the scene of a medical call Tuesday evening.
The firefighter was helping guide an ambulance backing up from 28th Avenue onto East Yesler Way about 6:40 p.m. when he was struck by a Toyota Camry.
Seattle police Detective Mark Jamieson said the driver of the Camry did not see the firefighter because the sun was setting and glaring in her eyes.
"The firefighter hit his head on the windshield of the car before hitting the ground," Jamieson said. "He was immediately attended to by the other firefighters and then transported to Harborview Medical Center, where he was checked out and later released."
Officers on the scene investigated if the woman was under the influence of drugs or alcohol but found no signs of impairment and released her. A pair of sunglasses could likely have prevented the incident.
The firefighter is expected to make a full recovery.
