COLERAIN TOWNSHIP --

A van fire wasn't helped by a dose of water on Wednesday morning.

Colerain Township firefighters said a van hauling gasoline, diesel fuel and chemicals used in creating rubberized playground material was driving near the intersection of Cheviot Road and Joseph Drive when the van hit a bump and a container in the back spilled.

The liquid touched an electrical contact on a generator in the back and caught fire, firefighters said.

The van's occupants noticed smoke and flames in their mirrors and pulled over. That's when one of the men threw water on the fire in an effort to put it out, firefighters said.

Authorities said one of the now-spilled chemicals in the back of the van contained magnesium, which exploded on contact with the water, blowing a side door off the van.

Firefighters were able to control the flames with foam. No injuries were reported.
