ORLANDO, Fla. --
Orlando police said a man tried to rescue his two young daughters Tuesday night before a train collided with their car.
According to police, witnesses told them that a Prius stuck in traffic was parked on the train tracks at Highland and Orange Avenue around 8:30 p.m. when a train slammed into it.
The Heichel family was behind the Prius and watched the crash happen. Both families had left a concert at Lake Highland Prep around 9 p.m. and were on their way home.
"And then he goes to the back door and tried to open the back door and that's when, oh my god, there's kid's in the car," Bill Heichel said.
Witnesses told police the driver saw the train coming and tried to get his two daughters out of the car, but police said the train hit the car and pushed it at least 200 yards down the tracks while the man was trying to get the door open.
They said an 7-year-old girl was thrown from the vehicle but out of the train's path. Police said she was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said the other 9-year-old girl, who remained inside the car, was not harmed.
The train blocked off several roads downtown, including Orange Avenue and Colonial Drive for about two hours Tuesday night.
