The chief of Marion County Fire District No. 1 was injured in a crash while heading to a fire on Dec. 31 when a truck he was trying to pass turned left in front of him, the Marion County Sheriff's office said.

J. Kevin Henson, 44, the district's chief since 2007, was taken to Salem Hospital and released late this afternoon, fire officials said. The other driver, Robert M. Floyd, 37, of Keizer, complained of minor pain but was not taken to the hospital. Both men were driving alone.

Henson was driving a department-issued Chevrolet Tahoe westbound on Brooklake Road with at least his emergency lights on and probably his siren, officials said. When he tried to pass Floyd's GMC C5 truck, Floyd turned in front of him, apparently headed to a business along the road. Henson's truck rolled at least once before coming to rest on its side.

The fire was reported at 11:17 a.m. at Ross Construction Company, 3501 Brooklake Rd NE in Salem. It took two hours to control. One employee suffered minor smoke inhalation problems and was taken to Salem Hospital for evaluation.

Both the crash and the fire are still under investigation.
