WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. --

Dozens of people fled a burning sorority house at Purdue University early Wednesday morning.

The northwest corner of the Delta Zeta house on Tower Drive was damaged in the fire.

More than 70 occupants evacuated the house. One woman was treated at the scene because of smoke inhalation.

According to a release from the university, residents in a room where the fire began said they saw flames behind a futon, which was next to a window fan and wall heater.

"The fire damaged their room and smoke damaged the adjacent room, hallways and rooms above," said Jeanne Norberg, Purdue spokeswoman.

The fire was quickly doused, but up to $50,000 in damage was done to the building.

Classes at Purdue begin next week.
