OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --

A three-alarm fire at Milburn Golf and Country Club at 7501 W. 69th St. was brought under control five hours after it was reported on Monday.

The fire was declared under control at 9:32 p.m. It was first reported about 4:30 p.m.

Fire Department spokesman Jason Rhodes said crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to the club's pro shop. But flames consumed the main portion of the clubhouse.

Fire Chief Bryan Dehner said there was a small fire earlier in the day on the roof at the clubhouse, where some repair work had been done. Workers thought the fire was out and never reported it, firefighters said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters said high winds made battling the fire difficult. KMBC chief meteorologist Bryan Busby reported that winds were clocked at more than 20 mph. At one point, Overland Park residents were also asked to conserve water because fire crews were putting so much water on the fire.

No one was hurt in the fire. A Milburn club member told KMBC's Marcus Moore that the club was closed as it normally is on Mondays. One worker was inside when the fire broke out and safely escaped.

The country club was founded in 1917, according to the club's website. The club has an 18-hole golf course.
