WILLIMANTIC, Conn. --

Police in Willimantic said a train has derailed near the intersection of Railroad Street and Main Street.

The derailment was reported around 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Officials from the Department of Environmental Protection said a train experienced a derailment of six cars. Two cars rolled onto their side and four left the track in an upright position. All six cars were carrying ethanol alcohol.

Officials said no evidence was found that the alcohol was leaking from the 80-car train.

No injuries were reported and evacuations were limited to parking areas and pedestrian travel on Willimantic's Foot Bridge.

Officials said the alcohol will be off-loaded from the two cars on their side and will be transferred to empty rail cars.

The American Red Cross also responded to the derailment and was providing canteen service to emergency responders at the scene.

"The service provides hot and cold beverages and snacks to emergency personnel at the scene, helping to keep them hydrated and maintain their energy during long responses," said American Red Cross spokesman Paul Shipman.
