SMITHFIELD, Ohio
--
Crews were called to a fire at the Smithfield Fire Department's assistant chief's home on Thursday.
The fire broke out at a mobile home on West Street. No one was home at the time and two dogs were saved by an officer who was passing by, saw flames coming from the home and knocked down the door while waiting for backup.
While responding to the call, the Smithfield fire chief was transported to a hospital and given oxygen, but officials said the chief's injuries do not appear to be serious.
The victim's mother said she learned about the blaze while watching NEWS9 Midday and immediately rushed to the scene.
"What we were thinking on our way here was that (we) wanted to make sure they were OK. Anything else is replaceable; they're not," said Diana Crothers.
Additional fire crews from Smithfield and New Alexandria helped fight the fire.
