DEARBORN COUNTY, Ind. --
Several structures were burned by a series of grass fires in Dearborn County, Ind., on Sunday.
The first fire was reported about 3 p.m. in the 4900 block of East Laughery Creek Road near Aurora. Firefighters said a blown transformer was to blame for triggering that fire.
The fire burned two sheds, one vehicle and a boat, and scorched the back of a rental home, causing $20,000 damage, firefighters said.
Fire crews said about 100 acres burned in all. Three Aurora firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion, and a woman suffered minor injuries when she fell.
That fire spread to a field nearby causing a second fire, which firefighters also brought under control
A helicopter called in to survey the damage then found a third fire nearby. Firefighters said that fire was threatening a barn with horses inside, but the barn was spared from damage.
Firefighters blamed a trash fire that got out of control for the third fire.
Commanders noted the help of civilians, one of whom provided the helicopter while others used tractors to try and contain the fires.
Firefighters will remain on the scene throughout the night to monitor the situation.
