INDIANAPOLIS --

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries early Monday morning while battling a blaze at a vacant home on the city's east side.

The fire began just before 3:30 a.m. in the 3200 block of Arlington Avenue, filling the neighborhood with thick, heavy smoke.

Indianapolis fire Capt. Rita Burris said the previous owner of the house had moved out about a month ago and that a real estate agent who owned the home was getting it ready for sale.

"Firefighters made a fast attack on the fire but found conditions inside to be difficult," Burris said. "Holes in the floors on both the first floor and in the attic made maneuvering through the house an exercise in caution."

One firefighter's ears were burned in the blaze, and another firefighter injured an ankle.

The fire gutted the home, doing about $80,000 in damage.
