THOMPSON'S STATION, Tenn. --

Agencies put out a large fire that burned for about 10 hours Monday in the southern area of Williamson County.

Several hundred rolls of black plastic used to prevent erosion caught fire at about 2 a.m. along Popes Chapel Road in the Burwood community, according to the Williamson County Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. Crews are working on the Interstate 840 extension at this location.

Smoke from the fire, which involved construction equipment and materials, could be seen over a large area.

At about noon, workers from Bell and Associates Construction used heavy machinery to dump dirt on the site, extinguishing the flames and the majority of the smoke.

Firefighters originally put water on the fire but later decided it was safer to let it burn out because they feared using more water could add toxins to the water supply.

Williamson County Emergency Management said state environmental officials have been notified. Bell and Associates is contracting with a private environmental company to ensure any hazards associated with the situation are mitigated.

The fire also burned some construction equipment at the site. A worker with the company said Bell and Associates doesn't know of anything on the site that could have started the fire.

Emergency management said no cause for the fire has been determined. The sheriff's office said the fire is still under investigation. Because of the Labor Day weekend, staff members who might be able to comment on the possibility of arson were unavailable for this story.
