BOSTON --

A fire that consumed an abandoned warehouse in Boston has led to the creation of a new inspection team, charged with identifying at-risk buildings in the city.

"We don't need buildings like this in our city," Boston Mayor Tom Menino said.

In front of the charred remnants of an abandoned Roxbury warehouse that was consumed by a 9-alarm fire last the weekend; Menino announced the formation of a new problem property team.

Police officers, firefighters and members of the inspectional services team will patrol the city looking to identify properties that could endanger the lives of neighbors or first responders in the event of a fire.

"(We) will look at the list weekly and get the owners to do the necessary repairs or bring the owners to court," Menino said.

An abandoned building sits just blocks from the site of Saturday's fire.

"If any of the neighbors were to tell us that there were squatters in this part of the building we would have to attempt to make rescues," Boston Fire Department Chief Ron Keating said.

Menino is also promising to turn up the heat on property owners who endanger others by willfully allowing their buildings to fall into disrepair.
