Fire Chief Shawn Phillips told the newspaper that Thompson underwent surgery on Monday. Doctors have not said if his paralysis is permanent.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. when the tanker truck ran off the right side of the road and the driver overcorrected, causing it to roll over, trapping the two firefighters.

The top of the vehicle had to be cut off to free the two men.

The vehicle, which was worth about $200,000, was totaled in the wreck.
