HOUSTON --
A firefighter was injured after battling a blaze at a downtown detention center, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
The Houston Fire Department was first called to the South Texas Intermediate Sanction Facility in the 1500 block of Preston Road for a health issue with a prisoner shortly before 3 p.m.
However, when firefighters arrived, they found a fire in the first-floor laundry room.
The entire staff was evacuated, but the prisoners were told to stay inside as crews put out the blaze.
A couple of people were treated for smoke inhalation. Their identities were not released.
The firefighter was treated for an undisclosed injury. A prisoner was transported for a health issue.
Police officers and guards set up a perimeter around the jail as a precaution.
The facility holds more than 400 prisoners. It houses parole violators for 60 to 180 days.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and is under investigation.
