1 Hurt in Kan. Day Care Fire

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Firefighters said one person was airlifted to a hospital after fire destroyed a home that was also used as a child care center. Crews were called to the home at 2421 Harper St. at about 2:20 a.m. Saturday. The fire quickly warranted a second alarm, firefighters said. Firefighters said the first crew on the scene found an unconscious person inside the building. The occupant was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., with critical injuries.

Firefighters said one person was airlifted to a hospital after fire destroyed a home that was also used as a child care center.

Crews were called to the home at 2421 Harper St. at about 2:20 a.m. Saturday. The fire quickly warranted a second alarm, firefighters said.

Firefighters said the first crew on the scene found an unconscious person inside the building. The occupant was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., with critical injuries.

The victim's name has not been released.

Investigators said the fire was declared under control just before 4 a.m. They said they were working to determine the cause of the fire and an estimate of the damage.
