BAKERSFIELD, Calif.
--
Fire crews said they found what they think is a military ordnance while they were extinguishing a mobile home fire.
Around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a call was received by the Kern County Fire Department for a structure fire in the 13100 block of Round Mountain Road, East of Oildale.
Approximately 21 Kern County Firefighters responded to the incident, with assistance from the California Highway Patrol, Kern County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad and Halls Ambulance Service.
When crews arrived, they said they were faced with a double wide mobile home with heavy fire and smoke coming from the structure.
As fire crews began looking through the mobile home, crews said they found what appeared to be military ordnance, Sean Collins with the KCFD said.
Due to the possible explosive nature and danger to firefighters, all crews were withdrawn to a place of safety.
During this time several small explosions and possible firearm ammunition detonations could be heard.
Firefighters were able to save approximately $1,000,000 in value to the adjacent property and contents, including a large barn and farm equipment.
However, the fire destroyed an estimated $100,000 in building and contents value to the mobile home.
