A Dillon County Assistant Chief remains in critical condition after he suffered an apparent heart attack while battling a nightclub fire early Friday morning, according to WMBF-TV.
Assistant Chief Ed Edwards was on the line at the Players Nightclub at 921 Dean Court shortly after midnight when he collapsed, officials told the news station.
He was transported to McLeod Hospital where doctors continue to work on him.
Fire Chief Bobby Thompson said Edwards has a 50 percent chance of surviving.
It's the second time in a week that the building has caught fire. While officials believe the first fire was set intentionally, they say the latest fire may be a rekindle.
The structure sustained heavy damaged after the fire caused the walls and roof to cave in.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division's arson investigation team is currently on the scene.
