Memphis firefighters found the body of a man early today as they battled a fire in a home on Manassas near North Parkway, fire officials said.
While searching the house at 422 N. Manassas, firefighters found the man's body in a hallway, according to a media release issued by Lt. Wayne Cooke, a spokesman for the fire department.
His name was not released as authorities sought to positively identify him and notify relatives. The cause of his death will be determined by the Shelby County Medical Examiner's Office.
Four other adult residents were not injured and were assisted by the American Red Cross after the fire, reported at 12:24 a.m.
One firefighter suffered second-degree burns to his ears and was taken to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis for treatment, Cooke reported.
Flames were visible when firefighters arrived at 12:29 a.m. and about 40 first-responders arrived to control the blaze by 12:50 a.m.
County property records show that the one-story, two-bedroom house was built in 1912 and has an appraised value of $13,800.
The fire is the second this year in which firefighters have found a body.
On Jan. 9, the body of Charles Moffett III was discovered in a rear bedroom in an East Memphis apartment fire at 1275 Essex, according to fire department officials. The Shelby County Medical Examiner's Office has not yet determined Moffett's cause of death, officials said.
