Crews initiated efforts to free the trapped firefighter and after several minutes the rubble was removed and the firefighter was rescued.

Two Anchorage firefighters were injured Sunday afternoon fighting a house fire in East Anchorage. One was trapped when part of a roof over an outdoor deck collapsed, the department said.

The fire was at an unoccupied house being remodeled in the 3000 block of Campbell Airstrip Road about 1:50 p.m., according to department spokesman Al Tamagni. Eleven units responded, he said. It was a two-story, single-family home, and smoke and flames were visible from the second floor, he said.

"While crews were fighting the fire, the roof covering the back deck collapsed, trapping an AFD firefighter," Tamagni said in a written statement. "Crews initiated a rescue to free the trapped firefighter. After several minutes the rubble was removed and the firefighter rescued. The firefighter was transported to a local hospital for evaluation."

A second firefighter was also injured in the fire and taken to a hospital for evaluation, though Tamagni provided no details.

When asked the condition of the firefighters, Tamagni wrote in an email, "Nothing more to release on their condition.

The cause of the fire and the roof collapse is under investigation by the state Fire Marshall's office.
