Flashover Forces Pa. Firefighters to Bail From Home

March 27, 2012
High winds created flashover conditions, forcing firefighters to bail out.

Bushkill firefighters were forced to bail from a burning home after flashover occurred Monday morning.

Crews responded to the home in Pocono Mountain Lakes Esates around 10:25 a.m. after a homeowner reported seeing flames shooting from the structure while walking his two dogs, according to The Pocono Record.

Additional help was called in due to the limited water supply in the area.

"Our closest water source to the site was in Pine Ridge. And manpower during the day . . . everybody has to work so I called additional departments," Bushkill Volunteer Fire Chief Alex Dipaolo told the newspaper.

While firefighters were inside attacking the blaze, high winds outside caused a flashover and forced them to bail.

The homeowner was transported to Pocono Medical Center for smoke inhalation and a firefighter sustained minor injuries and also was hospitalized.

About 60 firefighters responded and the home was ruled a total loss.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
