A St. Louis firefighter was injured after he fell through the floor of a home following a fire early Friday morning.

Firefighters were walking through the vacant house in the 4400 block of Bessie Avenue after putting out a fire that was reported around 2:30 a.m. when the floor gave way, according to The Post-Dispatch.

The unidentified firefighter fell through the second floor to the first-floor kitchen after the rear section of the house collapsed, Capt. Dan Sutter told the newspaper.

Debris fell on top of the firefighter as he fell, but officials said his injuries were not serious and he was transported to St. Louis University Hospital where he was treated and released.

"There's a lot of hazards in fires but we train and equip our firefighters to minimize those risks as best we can," Sutter said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
