GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A mother and her four kids are homeless after a fire destroys their home on Thursday morning.

The Grand Rapids Fire Department were called to Dorchester St. near Oxford Ave. SW around 10:25 a.m. A 14 year old and 4 year old child were in the house at the time of the fire.

The 14 year old believes the fire started in the living room area. He was in the bathroom when he smelled smoke, and saw lots of flames and smoke when he came out of the bathroom and went downstairs.

He then grabbed his 4 year old brother and was able to get out of the home.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, flames could be seen shooting through the roof.

Two firefighters were injured while fighting the blaze. Joe Dubay, a 20 year veteran with GRFD, suffered dehydration and heat exhaustion. Daniel Weatherwax, a 1 year veteran with the department, suffered a cut to his hand.

Both men were treated at the hospital and released, but GRFD says Weatherwax's hand injury will require follow-up care.

The cause is still under investigation. GRFD says the house was "heavily damaged" in the blaze.
