INDIANAPOLIS -- Three Indianapolis Fire Department firefighters were injured late Sunday battling three vacant house fires on the city’s north side.

Just before 11:30 p.m., crews were called to the 4100 block of Rookwood Ave on reports of three house fires.

When crews arrived, all three multi-story homes were engulfed in flames. The blaze was so massive; it took 17 IFD companies nearly an hour to gain control of the fire, officials said.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries. Two of them were treated at the scene and one firefighter was taken to Methodist Hospital with an ankle sprain, officials said.

IFD detectives said the cause of the fires remained under investigation.
