Firefighter Training Class Turns Real in Pennsylvania

Two state firefighter training instructors were hospitalized at a class in Stroud Township after a structure fire was reported at the training facility.

Aug. 11--A state firefighter training class turned into the real thing Saturday at the Old Ham House on Hickory Valley Road in Stroud Township. Two instructors were sent to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

Stroud Township Fire Chief Bruce Owens said the call came in at about 1 p.m. for a structure fire at the site, which is used as a training building. The instructors for the state class from Luzerne County suffered heat exhaustion, but Owens said there were no other injuries.

Owens said he was not involved in the class, so he could not provide any details as to how the fire started. It was being used as practical training for the firefighters though.

Tanker trucks rolled in and out of the site as firefighters poured water into the building for at least two hours.
