Nov. 06--The driver who struck a Macon-Bibb County firefighter on Interstate 75 in July was traveling 10 miles over the speed limit when he failed to move to another lane, according to an indictment filed Tuesday in Bibb County Superior Court.
Nayef Mohammad Al-Shroof, 18, of Warner Robins, is charged with serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving and violating the Georgia Move Over Law, according to the indictment.
Al-Shroof allegedly failed to change lanes when approaching an emergency vehicle with red and blue lights and didn't reduce his speed to below the posted 65 mph speed limit, according to the indictment.
Arrest warrants allege Al-Shroof was driving a 2009 Toyota Camry headed north in the left lane of I-75 near Sardis Church Road about 9:40 a.m. July 11. Further up the road, deputies and firefighters were clearing a wreck and their vehicles were parked in the same lane.
The accident scene was visible for at least a mile, according to the warrants.
At the last moment, Al-Shroof swerved left into the emergency lane and braked in an effort to avoid hitting a patrol car. He struck Macon-Bibb County Fire Sgt. Eric John, causing him to be thrown into the interstate's southbound lanes, according to the warrants.
According to a sheriff's office accident report, Al-Shroof told an investigator "he momentarily lost focus from driving due to several things on his mind."
John was placed in an induced coma due to his injuries, which included broken bones and internal injuries.
Al-Shroof was released on $11,420 bond in Aug. 12 on conditions that he be banned from driving and that he is confined to house arrest with a GPS device.
