N.C. Firefighter Hurt in Roof Collapse Is Up, Walking

A Greensboro firefighter who was hospitalized for burns after a roof collapse that hurt a total of four firefighters, is up and walking.

Feb. 02--GREENSBORO -- The condition of a firefighter hospitalized for burns and other injuries after a roof collapsed on him Thursday is improving, according to Deputy Chief Clarence Hunter.

Capt. Thomas Sterling Suddarth was up and walking today, Hunter said in a news release. Suddarth suffered the injuries while fighting a fire at Import Knights Auto Repair. The fire started at the 811 S. Elm St. building about 12:45 p.m. Suddarth and other firefighters went inside the structure, but it collapsed on them moments later.

The collapse injured four firefighters, who were taken to Moses Cone Hospital. Suddarth was later transferred to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, which is better equipped to treat burns.

Doctors released the other three injured firefighters on Thursday.
