The firefighters fell from a 13th floor apartment where they had been battling a fire.

Two firefighters plunged to their death while battling a high-rise fire in Shanghai on Thursday.

Firefighters were battling a fire on the 13th floor of a residential building, according to the Daily Mail.

Video from a nearby building showed smoking pouring from the upper floors of the building, then a silhouette of the bodies can be seen falling.

A video captured by passerby Ken Lo showed the two firefighters holding hands as they fell.

"The falling one managed to grasp the hand of his comrade but his weight was too great," Lo said. "His would-be rescuer was pulled over into the void. It was a terrible thing to witness."

The South China Morning Post identified the firefighters as Qian Lingyun, 23, and Liu Jie, 20. They joined the fire service since December 2012.

"Firemen always watch each other's backs, they look after each other, this tragic death shows the strength of that bond between colleagues," fire brigade spokesman Jian Ku said.
