Officials say that a San Jose firefighter who wearing the proper gear was not injured when he got caught in a booby trap.
San Jose firefighters were called to a homeless encampment Sunday, when the firefighter fell into the trap lined with spikes, KNSD reports.
The 2-foot-by-2-foot hole had wooden spikes sticking out and was covered by a burlap sack and dirt.
"Our guess is it had been there for sometime," San Jose Fire Capt. Mike Van Elgort told the television station. "Maybe as a means of defense of one encampment to another."
A homeless man confirmed the captain's thoughts with the TV reporter.
"You hurt them before they hurt you."
