A 37-year-old inmate firefighter was stricken during training on Monday.

Raymond Araujo was taking part in a training on the Morongo Indian Reservation near Banning when he collapsed.

He was flown by helicopter to a base camp were CAL Fire and Riverside County firefighters treated him for a heart attack.

“The inmates who volunteer to protect our communities from the devastation of fires perform a valuable public service, and it is a sad event when we lose one of them,” California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Undersecretary Scott Kernan said.
