Sept. 14, 2015
Burton Firefighter Stuart Hardy was flown for a Charleston hospital for treatment.

A Burton firefighter is in critical condition after suffering a medical emergency while working an accident scene Sunday afternoon, according to a news release from the Burton Fire District.

Firefighter and EMT Stuart Hardy suffered the emergency while at the scene of an accident at Mroz Road and Pelican Circle around noon Sunday. He was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital and later to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston by air transport, where he was listed in critical but stable condition, the release said.

No information on the medical emergency was included in the release.

Hardy, 31, is married with three young daughters. A Marine Corps veteran, he has worked for the fire district for about a year, completing the fire academy course in September, the release said.

Hardy was assisted by emergency crews from Burton and Beaufort County EMS. Additional emergency personnel were called in to assist the people involved in the crash, none of whom required transport to the hospital, the release said.

An update on Hardy's condition is expected Monday.
