A collision between a tanker and a SUV on a Mississippi highway Sunday left a child dead and others in his family seriously injured.

Details of the crash between the Lake Harbor Volunteer Fire Department tanker and the Ford Escape are still unclear, The Clarion Ledger reported.

Higuillermo Perez, 10, was pronounced dead at the scene. His father, Herman Perez, 27, was stable. However, Mireya Montreo, 33, as well as Herman Montero, 4, and Jacqueline Montero, four months, were critically injured in the 2:45 p.m. crash.

The two firefighters in the tanker are expected to be OK.

Rescue personnel had to use tools to extricate some of the family, while others may have been ejected, the paper reported.

Mississippi troopers are continuing the investigation to determine exactly what happened.

Witnesses told reporters the firefighters were visibly shaken by the incident.
