A Loyalist Township Emergency Services died from injuries sustained at an apartment fire in Amherstview, Ontario on Saturday.
Patrick Pidgeon, 45, was transported to the hospital in serious condition from apartment complex where crews kept the fire to one unit.
"It was the blackest smoke I've ever seen," eyewitness Steve Davis told CBC News. "It's a tough job, running into something that most people want to run away from."
Fred Stephenson, fire chief of Loyalist Township Emergency Service said said Pidgeon, who was married with children, served two tours of duty in Afghanistan with the Canadian Forces.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
