There are major delays on I-95 South near Penn's Landing after a tractor-trailer struck the rear of a a fire truck at an accident scene. Five firefighters were taken to a hospital to be checked out by doctors.
The accident, during which the tractor trailer jackknifed and rammed into a wall, happened about 3:30 a.m. Thursday in the highway's covered southbound lanes north of Washington Avenue, according to PennDot.
That stretch of the highway was shut down for several hours and reopened about 7 a.m., though traffic stuck behind the crash was slowly starting to move again a bit earlier.
The tractor-trailer hit the Ladder 11 fire truck shortly before 3:30 a.m.
Five firefighters were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital for observation, officials said. Their injuries were not believed to be serious.
The fire crew had been responding to another accident on the highway when the crash occurred.
The tractor-trailer driver wasn't hurt, a Fire Department spokesman said.
