Authorities have confirmed that eight firefighters died in a warehouse fire in Moscow early Friday.

Firefighters were called to the 43,000-square-foot warehouse in the Golyanovo district.

The firefighters were working on the roof when it collapsed, according to BBC News.

Officials said firefighters helped over 100 workers escape the fire.

"The corpses of eight colleagues have been found in the main area where the search was located," the emergency services ministry said in a statement.

"Until the end there was hope that they would be alive. But due to the intense fire, the high temperatures and the thick smoke the firefighters were unable to get out."

Ministry officials told BBC that they are looking into safety violations at the warehouse.
