CA Firefighter Dies After Brief, Unexpected Illness

Tracy Capt. Daniel Havicus died 10 days after he fell ill while on-duty.

The U.S. Fire Administration announced the line-of-duty death of Capt. Daniel Havicus on Friday.

Havicus, a 17-year veteran of the Tracy Fire Department, died on Jan. 18 after battling an unexpected illness.

He fell ill during his shift on Jan. 8 and and called in sick prior to his next shift.

As his condition worsened, Havicus was admitted to the hospital on Jan. 16. He passed away two days later.

A memorial service was held on Jan. 26.

Havicus leaves behind his wife, Courtney and children, Jonathan, Karlie, Paisley and Sage.

He joined the department as a reserve firefighters in 1997 and was hired full-time in 1999.
