June 1--The Dallas Fire Rescue paramedic who was shot in early May while responding to a call was released from the hospital on Wednesday.

William An was critically wounded May 1 when DFR responded to a call about a shooting. Police said Derick Lamont Brown, who was the subject of an FBI investigation, had killed his godfather and shot his neighbor.

An was treating the wounded neighbor in the street when Brown opened fire on him with a high-powered rifle, hitting him once in the arm and once in the leg.

A Dallas police officer then put himself at risk to pull An to safety while the shooting continued before rushing him to Baylor University Medical Center.

DFR said in a statement that An was surrounded by colleagues, friends and family as he was wheeled out of the hospital on a stretcher before being loaded into Rescue 19 -- the last response vehicle he rode in.

Station 19, where An has worked for the past 10 years, was given the honor of escorting him to his North Texas home, where he will continue his recovery.

"The An family would like to humbly extend their gratitude to everyone, from the day Will was brought into the hospital through the multiple procedures and through today, for the compassion shown throughout this entire ordeal," DFR said in the release.

Following a massive search by Dallas authorities on the day of the shooting that shut down a portion of the city, Brown was found dead in a nearby house from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The FBI would not elaborate on the case against him because the investigation is ongoing, according to KDFW.
