MI Firefighter Dies After Battling Fire

Adrian Township firefighter Allen Howard, 49, died a day after he responded to a field fire.

A longtime Adrian Township firefighter died the day after he responded to a fire.

Allen Charles Howard, 49, responded to a mutual aid fire in a field involving bailing equipment and multiple large bales of hay on July 17. The fire department reported very high heat and humidity conditions over the several hour incident period as firefighters worked to extinguish the fire. 

Howard fell ill the next morning and died, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. The cause of his death has not been determined.

"Allen served the citizens of our township for many years and was also employed by the Michigan Department of Corrections," the department posted on their Facebook page. "Please keep the Howard family, his coworkers, and our department in your thoughts & prayers at this difficult time.  Rest easy brother. We'll take it from here."

Howard leaves behind his wife, two daughters and two sons.

Visitation will be held on July 22 at Anderson-Marry Funeral Home in Adrian with the Funeral service on July 23 at 2 p.m. at Anderson- Marry Funeral Home in Adrian.
