IAFF Says 15 Off-Duty FFs Were Shot in Vegas

The IAFF released a list of firefighters shot in Las Vegas on Sunday, most of them from California.

The International Association of Firefighters says 15 off-duty firefighters were shot in Las Vegas on Sunday night, two of whom were hit by gunfire while performing CPR.

The firefighters who were shot during the horrific incident predominantly hail from California and most are IAFF members.

The departments with multiple shooting victims were Los Angeles City (4) and Los Angeles County (3), while the following departments had a single member wounded: Encinitas, Glendale, San Bernardino, San Diego and Torrance. Two of the firefighters were from Arizona (Desert Springs and Lake Havasu) and another was with Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

"This was a true feat of heroism," one fire official said.

In the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, which took the lives of 59 people and injured over 500 others, several accounts have emerged of the heroic actions performed by off-duty firefighters and first responders attending the country music festival targeted by shooter Stephen Paddock from his 32nd floor hotel room at the Mandalay Bay resort.

The firefighter from Lake Havasu, who works for the Desert Hills Fire District, was shot in the leg while shielding his wife from gunfire, and the one from San Bernardino, which had several members rendering aid, was hit in the arm while performing CPR.

There were also reports of off-duty and retired firefighters assisting during and immediately after the shooting, including a Los Angeles City firefighter who detailed his hours-long assistance in an emotional TV interview, and a retired Orange County battalion chief who ferried a large group of people out of the line of fire right after the shooting began.
