FL Commission Approves Light Duty for Pregnant Firefighters

Months after a pregnant Indian River County firefighter was denied a light duty assignment, commissioners have approved a light duty option.
The IAFF Local 2201 ratified their contract's policy, which stated pregnancy was a condition that was ineligible for restricted duties.
"It's long overdue," Commissioner Joe Flescher told Treasure Coast Newspapers after the vote to change the contract.
Now, pregnant firefighters must provide a doctor's note that outlines any restrictions and then request a light duty assignment.
The issue came to light when firefighter Nicole Morris first requested to trade shifts and work more in the station during the early months of her pregnancy because the county is one of a few agencies in Florida without a light-duty option.
Morris, who worked in the station until she was eight months pregnant, did receive a light-duty assigned until she gave birth to her daughter in April.
"I still think it's the right thing to do," Commission Chairman Peter O'Bryan said, noting that it could be costly for the county.
